" ROME OF THE EAST
History goes back to 1675. there were more than 50 churches alone in the Old Goa, the former Portuguese capital city, that must have been crumbled by the touch of time.
As one explores Goa. one finds trails leading to Goa's historic ro Dravidian totems, Bijapuri mosques and Hindu temples destroyed by Bahamonis. The Portuguese rule in Goa began villi the historic arrival of Vasco da Gama. The Portuguese sailor disco*exed the sea route to India a landed at Calicut in May 1498. 12 years after. Afonso de Albuquerque daring soldier conquered Goa by defeating Adil Shah (Sultan of Bijap and the Mughal Emperor), who ruled Goa before the Portuguese. This was the beginning of a new era of changing features and attitudes splendour and compassion of missionaries. In the year 1510, the day 25th November, the Portuguese wc invited to Goa by the Hindu chieftain called Timoja. to free from t Muslim rulers of Bijapur (New District of Karnataka) and restored t land back to the Hindus. In return, the Portuguese were given freedom trade in India. Goa became the trade port for the Portuguese and thus sparked -the Portuguese regime in Goa. Goans were the silent spectators of t new era, which highlighted the spread of Christianity. The Portugue ruled Goa for around 450 years. Since then. Goa also served as gateway to India. Goans never believed to live dependent as district of oth neighbouring States for which they collectively fought during the histoi "Opinion Poll" on 16th January 1967 for non-merger wi:h Maharashtr This was not enough, in order to avoid any further temptation from ai other States also collectively requested the Central Government declare Goa as a State and from May 30. 1987 Goa is the 25th State India and Konkani is the official language."
